Sports is an integral part of education in any institution. It helps in developing the overall personality of an individual. In The National College, Basavanagudi, the department of Sports is very active. Many celebrities in the field of sports have emerged from here. To name a few, International cricketers such as Sri. E.A.S. Prasanna, Sri. B.S. Chandrashekar and Sri Anil Kumble are the products of this department. The department provides facilities to students to play all major games such as Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Cricket, Shuttle Badminton, Hockey, Ball badminton and Tennis. In the section of Indoor games there are facilities to play Chess, Table Tennis and Carrom. The department also maintains a Multi Gym. Inter-Collegiate Tournaments are conducted in Basketball (Men), Shuttle (Men), Table Tennis (Men & Women), Ball badminton (Women) by the department. Our students’ performance in the Inter-Collegiate Tournaments is very much satisfactory. We have been consistently one among the Top four teams of the Bangalore University in Cricket, Shuttle Badminton, Basketball and Table Tennis.
Apart from the celebrities mentioned earlier, there are many sports persons such as Tilak Naidu, Ramesh Hejmadi, K. Ramesh, K. Suresh, Anil Kumar, Madhu Kumar, R.P. Nagaraj, Sekhar K G, Umesh, Vinay V and Jayaprakash Shetty. They have performed very well from Ranji to Vizzy Trophy cricket and made us feel proud of them.
In Table Tennis players such as Kabad Jayanth, Vasanth Bharadwaj, Archana have donned Indian colours, where as G.K. Viswanath, C.R. Anand, Bhavani Bharadwaj, T.S. Ramakumar, T.S. Meenakshi and Radha Krishna have done extremely well at the State Level. G.K. Vishwanath was the Indian Team coach in Table-Tennis.
The department has the unique distinction of maintaining a Tennis court with coaching camps for children.
In Basket ball we have had players such as Dr. Aravind, Sanath kumar, Suchindra, Guruprakash R.R. and Jairaj who were part of Youth India Team at different times.
In swimming, the department has quite a good number of students representing the State and a few of them have represented the country. Prominent among them are Satish, Guruprasad, Arjun Balram. Our college bagged the overall championship at Bangalore University in Swimming competition during the year 2002-2003. Latest among them are Abhiram, Chetan Sharma, Bharat Kumar, Mridula. They have done extremely well at the National level. We are proud to announce that Ms. Mridula has broken the national record in one of the events.
In Badminton Divya Ramesh, became the Junior National Champion in 1997 while studying in Pre-university and represented India for five years during her stay in the college. The Government of Karnataka has honoured Ms. Divya with the “Ekalavya Award”, for the year 2001-02 the highest sports award in State for her outstanding performance in the field from 1991-2001.
