DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY

The Department of Zoology was started in 1964.

Faculty:

1. Prof. S. Vijayakumari, M.Sc.,M.Phil. Associate Professor and Head of the Department.
2. Prof.C.S.Mahabaleswar. M.Sc. Associate Professor
3. Prof. H.K. Hanumanthanna. M.Sc. Visiting Professor.

Courses offered:

• 3 year B.Sc [Chemistry, Botany, Zoology]
• 4 year B.S  [ Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Computer Science]

Zoological Museum–The Department has a well-equiped museum which any undergraduate college can be proud to possess. Apart from the students of Natural Sciences, this museum is also visited by the students of Anthropology/Sociology of the College.

Environmental Studies – as per guidelines of the UGC as a compulsory paper having similar status as the other core papers for students of all streams.

Learning resources of the department

The department has a library with about 135 books which is used by both the students and the members of the staff. There are two well-equipped laboratories.

Modern teaching methods

In addition to the regular teaching methodology, students are taken on excursion to study environmental issues. They are encouraged to collect specimens. Guidance is given to the students for their project work.

Collaborations

The Department collaborates with the Departments of Botany, Chemistry and Sociology in the teaching of some topics that are common in the syllabi.

In the last five years the V & VI semester students have done projects on Apiculture vermiculture and cancer with the help of university professors and private hospitals.

Future plans:

• New courses like Microbiology, Biotechnology
• New combinations in Natural Science including Computer Science as one of the major subjects
• Establishment of a research lab.
